New orangutan species in Sumatra

Scientists have discovered a new species of orangutan in the Indonesian island of Sumatra, but have also concurrently warned that it is in severe danger of going extinct.

Present in extremely small numbers, and faced with a fractured and damaged habitat, the primates, named Pongo tapanuliensis, number no more than 800, and scientists claim it is the most endangered great ape species in the world. The study, published in the journal Current Biology added that if steps are not taken to conserve the remaining forest land in the area, the species may be wiped out in our lifetimes. It is the first species of great ape to be discovered in nearly 90 years.
